I joined Mr Wong’s class at the start of J2 after a year of mediocre results in GP.

Even though I got an A in secondary school, GP felt like a very different ballgame compared to Secondary English. I felt that I could not grasp the fundamentals of writing and answering GP questions and so my GP grades were just above passing. Mr Wong’s lessons helped me with these issues by explaining and breaking down questions such that I could understand what I was lacking in. After every lesson, I felt that I had understood something that I previously didn’t.

Closer to A Levels, Mr Wong took to holding lessons more often to help his students. I have been with Mr Wong since the start of IP Year 3. Under his tutelage, I have learnt how to express and communicate ideas in a more persuasive and balanced way, as well as to think about local and global issues critically.

As a tutor, Mr Wong often goes the extra mile to offer assistance to his students. Even with his tight schedule, Mr Wong makes the time for his students, offering both private consultation sessions for targeted advice and feedback, and group consultation sessions to narrow in on a specific topic or issue that students need.

In addition, Mr Wong is extremely dedicated to his craft, and he is constantly working on and improving his lessons so as to cater to his students. On the IP side, Mr Wong takes time and effort to ensure that the lessons meet the needs of his students, taking into account the different curricula that various schools use. On the JC side, Mr Wong assists students in developing the right skills and knowledge to tackle General Paper, a subject that many regard as challenging to score in. Mr Wong always stays up to date with the news, often researching and sharing both local and global affairs to help students in their essays and AQs. However, instead of merely listing examples, Mr Wong makes an effort to explain the context and the impact of the examples so that we are better able to understand and apply them across various topics.

Another thing I truly appreciate is the vast amount of resources available to students. We are given many essays and comprehensions to enhance and hone our skills to better prepare ourselves for the A Level examination, beyond those done in the classroom. Another key resource provided is Mr Wong’s linguistic skill notes, which have aided me in my comprehensions from IP to JC. His notes are in-depth and precise, helping students to accurately identify the question types and equipping us with the framework and the tools to answer the questions well.

Throughout my lower secondary, English had always been my Achilles heel and I was getting consistent B and C. Furthermore the introduction of application questions and argumentative essays in the upper secondary posed greater challenges to me as I was lacking in current affair knowledge. As such, I enrolled in Mr Wong’s programme at the end of IP Year 3, hoping to improve my English.

My first impression of Mr Wong’s lessons was his extremely detailed and useful notes that touched on many current affairs and it gave me the contents required for the different themes of GP. Often, he would break down current affairs in detail and link them back on how they could be used as examples of essays. This significantly aided my weaker topics such as the Arts and Politics which I had almost no content beforehand. Before joining TRT, I wouldn’t have imagined myself to be able to confidently choose an art essay and score decently. Besides notes on current affairs, Mr Wong’s model essay structure allowed me to pick up many sophisticated vocabulary and useful phrases for essays, improving my Language score for essays.

Mr Wong’s linguistic notes and AQ pack also prepared me well for comprehension. His linguistic notes provided me with the different strategies and templates to answer different categories of the short answered questions. His AQ pack also covered a wide range of topics under Singapore context such as the Arts, Crime and Punishment, education, politics and much more.

Besides weekly lessons, Mr Wong also conducted complementary consultation for us when we got back our block test/prelim papers. During the consultation, he would analyse our mistakes for short answered questions, the areas we needed to improve on and how we could better our existing essay points. These consultations were usually conducted in a small group size and sometimes one-to-one. I believe these had been very effective for me to fully understand which part I lost my score and how I could prevent the same mistake again.

English was not his first language, but he got an A for General Paper

I joined Mr Wong’s General Paper (GP) lessons when I was in J2 in Hwa Chong Institution (HCI). As a foreigner, the English language was not my native language, thus both content and language had always been a huge challenge. Before joining the GP tuition lessons, my GP grade was hovering between D and E.

At first, I was a little sceptical about whether GP tuition lessons would make any difference given such a short time to the final A Level exam. However, after listening to Mr Wong’s clear explanation of GP topics and seeing genuine improvements in my class assignments after applying what I have learned from him, I have cleared all previous doubts.

In addition to all of the detailed analysis of current affairs and ample opportunities to practise our skills, Mr Wong’s openness towards different methods and ideas has also helped me to like the subject more. I have been with The Rationale Thinking Learning Centre since Sec 4 for English and thereafter getting into Raffles Institution (RI), General Paper (GP) tuition. While I obtained an A for my English in secondary school, I found GP content to be very different from secondary school.

Through Mr Wong’s GP classes, I learnt the important Linguistic Skills required to tackle the different components of the GP Comprehension paper. The materials provided covered a wide range of topics, ensuring that we are prepared to tackle the various types of questions.

I first joined Mr Wong’s General Paper tuition after attaining an egregious E grade for my General Paper (GP) at Dunman High School (DHS). Being in the Integrated Programme (IP), I was more comfortable with topics like Science & Technology and the Environment. However, moving up to IP Year 5, the exam questions became more difficult and the marking was also more stringent. Being well versed in Science & Tech, Mr Wong brushed up my skills in that area.

Furthermore, he began to expose me to hard topics like Democracy, Human Rights and the Arts. These topics, if taught well, could help a student increase his chances of scoring an A-grade. Mr Wong’s teaching of GP Comprehension is driven by the aim of laying a strong foundation of Linguistic Skills. Before our ‘A’ Level exams, he conducted additional consultation lessons for us. I joined Mr. Wong’s class at the end of IP Y3. Despite having consistently scored relatively well for English, I was never fully confident in my ability to articulate my arguments coherently in essays, nor answer SAQs well in paper 2. As such, I decided to source for a tutor. Like many of you reading this testimonial, I chanced upon Mr. Wong’s centre while surfing the web.

What initially drew me to try out his lessons is the fact that Mr. Wong is a one-man show. Being the sole teacher at TRT, he personally curates his materials and makes the effort to provide individualised feedback on essays to every student, if the student is willing to learn. Being his student of close to 4 years, I have realised that there are several things to like about Mr. Wong’s English and GP lessons.

Firstly, the wealth of knowledge Mr. Wong has never ceases to amaze me. Lastly, Mr. Wong is very receptive to feedback, and never stops improving on his pedagogy. To accommodate science students’ preference for templates, his linguistic skills notes have consolidated all possible SAQs into specific question types that can be answered with astounding accuracy using a fixed template. Despite being from the Integrated Programme (IP) track in Raffles Institution (RI), my English foundation was never strong. When I was in IP Year 3 to 4, my IP English results hovered between a GPA of 2.8 and 3.2. During my IP Year 5 Promo, I got a D grade for my General Paper (GP). Throughout Year 6, my GP result was, at best, a C grade.

After joining Mr Wong’s GP tuition classes, I found the curriculum to be very well suited to my style as he finds a good balance between the sharing of his extensive content knowledge on various topics (including Science and Tech, Politics, Arts and Social Issues) and the teaching of important skills that help us to critically tackle GP Comprehension and AQ better.

Why is there a need for General Paper Tuition and IP English Tuition?

The preponderance of students in Singapore struggle with mastering the Language subjects. However, the English language is arguably the most important subject in Singapore as it is our lingua franca. Furthermore, the daily use of Singapore Colloquial English (commonly known as Singlish) is exacerbating this problem further. As a language specialist, we aim to tackle this prevalent issue. A strong foundation in the English language is vital to acing other subjects such as General Paper, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, etc. and ultimately getting coveted placements in Ivy League Universities.

Are your tuition classes conducted in a group setting or individual tuition?

Our General Paper and IP English tuition classes are conducted in a well-controlled group. Unlike Science and Mathematics, the IP English language and General Paper requires more than just rote learning of formulas. It is through the cross-fertilisation of ideas while studying for the language subjects that our students are exposed to various ideas, opinions and perspectives – the perfect environment that stimulates critical thinking. This will ultimately aid them in crafting a coherent essay during their examinations. While we aim to provide a broader view of the language subjects, we also refine the curriculum to suit our students’ needs, rectifying their weaker aspects and cementing their foundation before building upon it.

Who is the tutor?

Mr Edwin Wong personally coaches his students for both General Paper and IP English tuition programmes. He is a well sought-after English language specialist, revolutionary thinker and transformational teacher. He has helped numerous students achieve Distinctions in their IP English examinations and their ‘A’ Level General Paper and many of them have gone on to secure placements in competitive academic courses in local universities or obtained Public Service Commission (Overseas Scholarship) with Ivy-League Universities.
